AUTUMN SHADES

[STYLE] Photographer Sarah Brimley and Out There Fashion Editor Pop Kampol show us how to sport stylish shades this fall.

SHOP IT: Dark red round frame sunglasses from MARC by MARC JACOBS | Turquoise and red round frame sunglasses from SMITH

Ok, so maybe we didn't have the Indian summer we were all hoping for in the UK this year. But as we're all part of the international jet-set, we sure that over the next few months you'll be jetting somewhere hot and sunny.

We all want to look really good, but design might not be enough for you if you're looking for protection from those harmful UV rays. Many cheap sunglasses on the market today might not be the right answer when it comes to UV protection. Long-term exposure speeds up ageing of your eyes, and can even lead to cataracts.

So to stay healthy, look for CE mark when buying sunglasses. CE indicates how much protection your sunglasses provide against UV rays. The CE mark usually appears on the leg of the sunglasses alongside the category number code. The European standard rate the UV sunglasses ranges from '0' for insufficient protection, '1' for sufficient, '2' for good, and '3' for full UV protection.

EDITOR'S PICK: SUMMER SHORTS

BY POP KAMPOL

Wherever you are, we hope there's sunshine! If you're lucky enough to have it, it looks like you've finally got chance put on your best shorts. From high-street to high-brand, there's a wide range of shorts to suit every taste - amazing prints,  colourful palettes. This week we spotted a cool guy in Bangkok, where people have to know how to dress for the heat.

Name: Yota Sampasneethumrong, 33
Hometown: Bangkok, Thailand
Occupation: Web & Graphic Designer
T-shirt: A.P.C, Check shirt: Polo, Denim jacket: flea market, Shorts: ACNE, Belt: Topman, Loafers: flea market, Watch: vintage Bulova from 1970, Sunglasses: Ray Ban

OT: What's the best thing about summer?
Yota: You can travel light on vacation.

OT: Any tips on keeping stylish in the heat?
Yota: Bright coloured shorts with a creased shirt and t-shirt are best for summer. Most people think summer is all about wearing as little as possible, but a few layers of lightweight pieces will definitely let you shine. This lightweight-layered approach is also a good way of playing with prints, colours and patterns; winter clothes don't give you this freedom. Also I like to add a vintage piece of clothing to express my identity.

Here's my pick: pull off this stylish, summer look by layering this stripy T-shirt from Aubin & Wills with this amazing checked shirt from Burberry, bright colourful shorts from J.Crew, and finish with these iconic horsebit loafers from Gucci. Make the most of the heat and dress for the English summer while you have the chance.

SHOP THE LOOK: Blue washed cotton check shirt from BURBERRY BRIT | Red & grey cotton stripe t-shirt from AUBIN & WILLS | Peach 'Stanton' cotton shorts from J.CREW | Tan horsebit leather loafers from GUCCI

THE STRAW HATS

BY POP KAMPOL

SHOP IT: Contrasting stripe straw hat from MY BOB

Straw hats have been keeping the summer sun out of our eyes for over half of a millennium. One appeared on the head of Giovanni Arnolfini in Jan van Eyck’s famous portrait of 1434. Of course, the most famous straw hat is the traditional brimmed hat from Ecuador that’s made from the plaited leaves of the toquilla plant. The 'Panama' hat has been popular since the 19th century, but popularity became a craze when President Theodore Roosevelt was photographed wearing one on his visit to view the construction of the Panama Canal.

SHOP IT: Brown trilby straw hat with blue and white floral printed twisted band from PAUL SMITH

Panamas are best worn with light summer-weight suits, such as cotton, linen and silk. They are made specifically for the tropical sun, light-weight and breathable material. A key feature of the design is its ability to retain its original shape after being folded. The finest Panama hats still come from the city of Montecristi in Ecuador. The highest quality (Superfino) hats can take up to 4 months to weave. The weave can be so fine (1,600 – 2,500 per square inch) they can hold water, and when folded for storage can pass through a wedding ring.

SHOP IT: Natural coloured straw ‘Borsalino’ hat with greean and red stripe detail at the base from GUCCI

We’ve selected one of the most fashionable straw hats around, made with the finest Panama weave from Gucci, and two light-weight fashion hats from My Bob and Paul Smith for everyday protection from the sun

This week we collaborated with London-based illustrator Pomme Chan to draw some beautiful images. Her work has been featured in The Telegraph, IDN, Grafik, Curvy Book and FT magazine. She has also produced lots of beautiful illustrations for big campaign with Sony, MTV, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Marc Jacobs, and Microsoft. She’s also made us a short video that looks into the process of making these amazing drawings exclusively for Out There magazine.
